Active Autowerke F80 M3/F82 M4 Single Mid Pipe

The Active Autowerke single mid pipe replaces the restrictive factory middle section on the BMW F80 M3 and F82 M4. It is the straight-pipe version, so expect the deepest and loudest result of the single mid pipe family. The Active Autowerke F-brace is included.

The twin-turbo S55 feeds the exhaust from front and rear downpipes that differ in length by almost a foot and a half, so the two banks of three cylinders arrive out of step. That mismatch is what owners describe as the raspy, "two inline-threes" or weed-eater sound.

What It Does

BMW fitted the F8X with a middle silencer that has a small internal crossover. It helps with drone, but it is restrictive and it makes the out-of-step turbo sound worse. Active Autowerke removed it and merged both banks into one large pipe. Merging into a single pipe cancels much of the buzzy tone and gives a deeper, more even note. Taking the extra pipe out also saves weight compared with the factory part.

Materials and Construction

Active Autowerke needed a 3.5 in pipe for flow but had to keep ground clearance, so the single section is oval rather than round. The part is designed for an exact fit on both the F80 M3 and F82 M4 and bolts to the factory rear section or to an Active Autowerke rear exhaust.

• Active Autowerke lists this part for the F80 M3 sedan and F82 M4 coupe. The F83 M4 Convertible is not on its list, so contact us before ordering for that car.

FAQ

Single or equal length mid pipe?
The single mid pipe is the simpler, lighter way to cut rasp and free up flow. The equal length mid pipe goes further on sound quality by evening out the two banks before they mix.

Will it drone?
It is louder than stock. If you want less rasp, choose the resonated version, 11-037R.

Does it work with the stock rear exhaust?
Yes. Active Autowerke shows it running with the factory rear section in its demo video.
