M340i Mods: The Best Upgrades for the BMW G20 M340i, in Order
Quick answer: the best M340i mods, in the order most owners should do them, are a flash tune, a downpipe with a Stage 2 map, an intake and charge pipe, better intercooling, then an exhaust for sound, suspension and brakes. The tune comes first because the B58 responds to software more than to any single bolt-on. Before you buy anything, confirm three things about your car: the model year (2025+ cars use different downpipes), whether it's xDrive or rear-wheel drive, and whether its exhaust has a gasoline particulate filter (GPF, also called OPF).
The G20 M340i is one of the easiest modern BMWs to make fast. Its 3.0-liter B58 turbo inline-six is strong from the factory, well supported by tuners and parts makers, and shared with the M440i, Z4 M40i and GR Supra, so there's a deep pool of proven parts. Here's how to build one in a sensible order, what each mod does and the fitment details that trip people up.
M340i Mods at a Glance
| Mod | What it does | Needs a tune? | Fitment watch-outs |
|---|---|---|---|
| Flash tune (Stage 1) | Biggest single gain in power and torque | It is the tune | License must match your engine and DME |
| Downpipe (Stage 2) | More flow after the turbo, faster spool, louder exhaust | Yes, for the gains and to avoid codes on most pipes | 2020-2024 and 2025+ cars use different downpipes |
| Intake | More airflow, more induction and turbo sound | No, but it suits a tuned car | Check model-year coverage and state emissions rules |
| Charge pipe | Replaces a factory plastic pipe that can fail under extra boost | No | Some aren't made for xDrive cars |
| Heat exchanger | Cuts heat soak in hot weather and on repeated pulls | No | Air-to-water system, not a front-mount intercooler |
| Exhaust | Sound, valve control and weight | No | GPF vs non-GPF versions; model-year splits |
| Springs, sway bars, brakes | Stance, body control and braking for track days | No | xDrive vs RWD and adaptive vs non-adaptive suspension |
1. Start With a Tune
A flash tune rewrites the engine computer's targets for boost, timing and fueling. On the B58 it's the mod that changes the car the most for the money, and every later power mod depends on it.
The Bootmod3 (BM3) B58 tune is the most popular Bootmod3 license we sell. It flashes over the OBD port, includes one off-the-shelf map and the cable you need, and supports map switching from the steering wheel, flex fuel tuning and datalogging. For the Gen2 B58 in the 2020+ G20 M340i, bootmod3 lists these maximum gains:
| Bootmod3 map (Gen2 B58) | Horsepower | Torque |
|---|---|---|
| Stage 1, 91 octane | up to +18% | up to +28% |
| Stage 1, 93 octane | up to +21% | up to +30% |
| Stage 1, E30 | up to +28% | up to +34% |
| Stage 2, 91 octane | up to +22% | up to +33% |
| Stage 2, 93 octane | up to +25% | up to +35% |
| Stage 2, E30 | up to +31% | up to +38% |
E30 means a blend of about 30% ethanol. Running it full time takes a flex fuel kit or careful mixing at the pump. Stage 2 maps assume a downpipe, which is the next step. If you'd rather not flash the DME, plug-in tuners such as the DINANTRONICS X Performance Tuner are another route on this car.
2. Downpipe and Stage 2
The factory downpipe holds a dense catalytic converter right after the turbo, which is the biggest restriction in the M340i's exhaust. A larger aftermarket downpipe lets the turbo spool sooner and hold boost to redline, and it opens up the sound. Pair it with a Stage 2 map to get the gain.
Choose between catted and catless first. A catted downpipe keeps a high-flow converter and is the right choice for a street car. For example, Active Autowerke's GESI downpipe for the 2020-2024 M340i uses a 400 cpsi catalyst, and Active Autowerke says it runs without a check engine light. Catless downpipes remove the converter and are sold for off-road and competition use only.
Model year matters here more than anywhere else. Active Autowerke notes that 2025+ M340i and M440i cars use a different B58N downpipe with a GPF, so parts for 2020-2024 cars won't fit them. Compare options by fitment in our B58 downpipe collection.
3. Intake and Charge Pipe
An intake won't transform a stock car on its own, but on a tuned M340i it adds airflow at high rpm and lets you hear the turbo. Dinan's cold air intake for the 2020-2024 M340i is a good example of what to expect. Dinan lists peak gains of 9 wheel horsepower and 8 lb-ft, says it's legal for street use under the EPA's tampering policy, and notes it is not legal for sale or use in California. Injen and aFe also make intakes for the G20.
The charge pipe connects the intercooler to the throttle body. Factory charge pipes are a common weak point once boost goes up, so many owners replace them at the same time as a tune or downpipe. The Active Autowerke charge pipe for the G20 M340i is a direct replacement with silicone couplers and stainless clamps included. One important note: Active Autowerke says it doesn't fit xDrive cars, so confirm your drivetrain before ordering.
4. Cooling: Heat Exchanger
The M340i doesn't use a traditional front-mount intercooler. Its intake air is cooled by coolant, and that coolant is cooled by a heat exchanger at the front of the car. On hot days or back-to-back pulls, a tuned car can heat-soak and pull power. The AMS Performance heat exchanger for the M340i is built for this. AMS lists a 54% increase in core volume and 122% more coolant capacity than the factory unit. If you live somewhere hot or plan track days, add cooling before you add more boost.
5. Exhaust
A cat-back or axle-back exhaust is mostly about sound, valve control and weight rather than power. This is where you choose how the car sounds every day.
The Valvetronic Designs valved exhaust for the 2019-2026 M340i is the popular pick if you want both a quiet commute and a loud weekend. It has dual pneumatic valves and a 3.5-inch front section feeding dual 3-inch rear piping, it's offered in T304 stainless or Grade 5 titanium, and Valvetronic Designs says volume drops by more than 25 decibels with the valves closed. AWE offers Touring and Track Edition systems for the G20, Milltek offers cat-back and axle-back systems for 2021+ cars, and Dinan and Remus make axle-backs.
Two fitment checks before you buy: whether your car has a GPF (several systems and link pipes come in GPF and non-GPF versions), and whether the listing covers your model year. See every option in our BMW M340i exhaust collection.
6. Suspension, Brakes and Wheels
The M340i is heavy, and once it's tuned it's worth matching the chassis to the power. Lowering springs are the usual first step. Pick a set that matches your drivetrain and dampers: H&R, for example, makes a Sport Spring for the 2019-2022 M340i xDrive sedan that's listed for cars with adaptive suspension, and AST makes a 30 mm drop for the M340i xDrive. Stiffer sway bars from H&R reduce body roll without changing ride height.
For track days, a big brake kit is the most meaningful safety upgrade. Brembo offers GT, GT-S and GT-R six-piston front kits with 380 mm rotors for the G20 330i and M340i. Brembo lists those kits for 2019-2021 cars, so contact us before ordering for a later car. Wheels and tires come last but matter a lot. A good set of performance tires does more for lap times than most power mods.

Things to Check Before You Mod Your M340i
Model year. 2025+ cars have a revised B58 with a different downpipe, and some parts are listed only for earlier years. Many cosmetic parts are also split between pre-facelift and facelift (LCI) cars.
xDrive or rear-wheel drive. Springs, some charge pipes and some exhaust parts are drivetrain-specific.
GPF/OPF. Many exhaust parts come in versions with and without the particulate filter. Look at your car or ask us with your VIN.
Emissions and inspections. Catless parts are off-road and competition only, and states with inspections can fail a car with modified emissions parts. Intakes and other bolt-ons may not be legal in California.
Warranty. An aftermarket part doesn't void your whole warranty by itself, but a dealer can deny a related claim if they can show the part caused the failure. Tuned cars get more scrutiny, so keep receipts and know how to flash back to stock.

M340i Mods FAQ
What is the first mod I should do on my M340i?
A flash tune. It's the biggest single gain on the B58, it needs no hardware, and every later power mod depends on it. Bootmod3 lists up to 21% more horsepower for its Stage 1 map on 93 octane for the 2020+ G20 M340i.
How much horsepower can an M340i make with bolt-ons?
Bootmod3 lists up to 25% more horsepower for its Stage 2 map on 93 octane and up to 31% on E30 for the Gen2 B58. Results vary by car, fuel and conditions, so treat any figure as a maximum, not a promise.
Do I need a downpipe for Stage 2?
Yes. Stage 2 maps are written for cars with an aftermarket downpipe. Most downpipes also need a tune to run without fault codes, though some catted designs are built to avoid them.
Will mods void my M340i warranty?
Not automatically. In the US, the dealer generally has to show that an aftermarket part caused the failure before denying a related claim. Engine and drivetrain claims on tuned cars can still be disputed, so keep records.
Do M340i mods fit the M440i?
Often, because both use the B58. Many tunes, downpipes and charge pipes are listed for both the G20 M340i and G22 M440i, but exhaust and body parts are usually model-specific. Check the fitment list on each product.
Are 2025 M340i parts different?
Some are. Active Autowerke, for example, uses a separate B58N downpipe with a GPF for 2025+ M340i and M440i cars. Always check the model years on the listing.
