IPD Competition Plenum Details

After a very extensive R&D program, we are proud to launch the new 981 IPD 82mm Competition Plenums specifically designed to work in perfect concert with the upgraded 82mm throttle body. This combination has proven to be extremely effective and deliver even more performance than doing either component on its own. This Competition Plenum package will work with both 3.4L "S" and 2.7L "Non-S" applications.

The 981 intake is nearly identical to the 987.2 intake. Porsche made a few upgrades with the 981, most notably being that the 981 draws outside air from both driver and passenger air intakes instead of the driver's side only as previously found with all 986, 987 and 987.2 applications. IPD has developed a custom silicone hose designed to perfectly fit the larger 82mm throttle body and considerably improve air flow.

The new 981 Plenums also benefits from the internal dimpling effect that we are now implementing on all future Plenums. This internal dimpling allows us to control the boundary layer and maximize air flow. Just like a dimpled golf ball travels farther than a smooth golf ball. Controlled turbulent air creates less friction and "tumbles" over a given area more efficiently.

Power gains with the 981 Competition Plenum are virtually the same as with the 987.2 Competition Plenum, putting down 14 horsepower and 12 foot pounds of torque at the wheels. The bulk of the power gains from the IPD Plenum begin around 4000 rpm, continues all the way through to redline and become fully realized in the 6000 rpm range. IPD performance gains stay above both factory power curves throughout the entire rev range.

The IPD Plenums are products of efficiency that simply improve intake air flow and increase air velocity. The “Y” shape design and dimpled interior surface make air flow more laminar (less turbulent) dramatically improving power and torque across the entire RPM band. Smoother more optimized intake air flow will improve the performance of any engines. The more efficiently an engine breaths, the more efficiently it produces power.

The superior design of the IPD Plenums optimize flow while increasing air velocity. Period! This applies to any Porsche engine, producing any level of power. The patented “Y” design delivers impressive performance gains for both bone-stock and highly modified Porsches. The more efficient design of the IPD Plenum will always outperform the factory air distributor. The factory intake will become even more detrimental to performance as your increase the power and torque outputs. The bigger the power, the better the IPD Plenum performs.

The Plenums always deliver considerable gains on both turbo AND naturally aspirated engines. It’s a fact that the Turbo Plenums do produce more power than the NA Plenums. But the Turbo engines also produce more power. The fact is that the percentage gains of the different Plenum applications are actually almost identical, around 8-10% depending on the specific model.

IPD Plenums should never cause a CEL or require an ECU Flash. If a Plenum is installed correctly there should be no fault codes or running issues, only solid performance gains across the entire RPM band. The only issue that could possibly arise is the need for a new MAF sensor if you already have a degraded sensor or perform a TB adaptation. There is absolutely no need to re-flash your ECU after installing an IPD Plenum, Period! Although any reputable Porsche tuner could further optimize an ECU program to achieve even greater performance gains with the Plenum installed.

The Aluminum Plenums do NOT experience heat soak under driving or racing conditions. It is true that aluminum has a higher thermal conductivity than plastic. In fact, aluminum is 650 times more thermally conductive than plastic and has a specific heat capacity that is 550 times higher than plastic. This means the aluminum Plenum actually spreads the energy it’s exposed to 656 times faster than the plastic and can store more than 550 times the amount of energy per unit mass. Bottom line, aluminum can absorb more heat than plastic, but it also takes considerably more energy to heat up and it's losing that energy way faster than the aluminum allowing the IPD Plenum to remain cooler from outside ambient air under driving conditions, ultimately improving engine performance over plastic. Plus, why would Porsche utilize aluminum intakes on GT3’s, GT2’s, Cup Cars and Cup R’s?

NOTE: If you are upgrading your throttle body along with the IPD Plenum, you may need to visit a dealership to have them perform a manual throttle body adaptation process. Some customers have reported that installing the throttle body and plenum while the battery is disconnected results in the car performing an adaptation check once the battery is reconnected, alleviating the need to visit a dealership. However, Fabspeed recommends having the adaptation performed at a certified dealership for optimal results. If you need a recommendation for a dealership in your area, please contact us.

Fabspeed Motorsport offers an alternative tuning method for vehicles equipped with ECU's that traditionally required bench flashing. No longer do you need to remove your ECU and mail it in for a tune. The Handheld device interfaces with the OBD-II port in your vehicle and your computer to complete the tuning process. Simply flash your 987.2 Boxster and Cayman with a Fabspeed ECU Tune utilizing the included handheld tuner. Performance ECU software upgrade improves horsepower, torque, and driving characteristics by reprogramming various sensor inputs, air/fuel ratios, and boost pressure (if applicable).

• Read stock data on vehicle via OBD-II port with Handheld
• Interface Handheld with software on your computer and send in data to Fabspeed Motorsport via email to tuning@fabspeed.com
• We use this data along with information you provide about your vehicle to write a tune for your specific setup and email back your custom tune in 1-2 business days
• Write the Fabspeed ECU Tune to your Handheld, then to the vehicle with the Handheld
• Enjoy your increased performance!

No need to send your ECU in to return to stock - simply use the Handheld to flash back, then to your Fabspeed XperTune again at any point!

• Please review our Tuning Guide in the instructions above and email the ECU Tuning Information form to us. We utilize this form to ensure we meet your needs and consider your modifications to deliver the best possible results.
• You must have access to a PC / Windows computer (Mac OS not supported) to upload your factory file information to us via email and in turn apply our ECU Tune to your Handheld device.
• Upon sending us your vehicle information, our tuner will email you a custom ECU Tune(s) within 1-2 business days.
• The Handheld device "marries" with your vehicle and can only be used on one vehicle.

DOES MY CAR HAVE “PSE”?

The Porsche Sport Exhaust – better known as PSE – was a factory option available on many late model Porsches. You can quickly and easily determine if your vehicle is equipped with PSE by taking a look at your center console. If your console has a button on it with an “exhaust tip” icon (see photo), then your vehicle is equipped with PSE, and you should select the PSE option when adding this product to your cart. If you do not see this button, the your vehicle does not have PSE and you should select the standard exhaust option when checking out.

This product contains a High-Flow Sport Catalytic Converter solely intended for track and race cars as it is NOT California Air Resources Board Certified and not EPA certified.
