VRSF Race Intercooler F30 335i, 328i, M235i, 435i | 2012-16

The VRSF stepped race intercooler is the top front mount option VRSF builds for N20 and N55 F-chassis BMWs. It fits the F30 320i, 328i and 335i, the 328i wagon, the F32 and F36 428i and 435i, and the F22 228i and M235i. At 117 percent larger than the factory unit, it is aimed at heavily tuned and upgraded-turbo cars that need the most cooling the stock location can hold.

What It Does

On a tuned car the factory intercooler can rise 55 to 60 degrees during a second-to-fourth-gear pull, which robs power and invites knock. VRSF logged an N55 F30 335i on a 75-degree day starting a 2-4 gear pull at 89 degrees and finishing at 86. Intake temperature actually dropped. That car showed peak gains of 21 hp and 33 lb-ft, with more than 50 hp and lb-ft gained in the midrange.

Materials and Construction

The high-density bar-and-plate core uses staggered, offset fins inside and out and is much more resistant to stones than the factory tube-and-fin core. Bolt-on cast aluminum end tanks use the factory intercooler piping, and the mounting tabs keep the factory fan shroud in place. Each unit is hand finished and pressure tested. The core measures 21 x 11 x 6 inches.
