F80 M3 Mods: The Best Upgrades in Order (2015-2018)

by AutoTalent 30 Oct 2026 0 Comments

Quick answer: the best F80 M3 mods, in order, are a bm3 tune, upgraded charge pipes, downpipes (stage 2), an intake and a mid-pipe or cat-back exhaust, backed by a pinned crank hub and better cooling before you go big on boost. The US F80 M3 was sold for model years 2015 to 2018, and it shares its S55 3.0L twin-turbo inline-six (425 hp, 444 hp with the Competition Package) with the F82/F83 M4, so almost every part below fits both.

This guide ranks each upgrade by the power and fun it adds per dollar, flags the ones that protect the engine, and lists real parts we carry with current prices.

1. Tune first: bm3 for the S55

A flash tune is the first F80 M3 mod for a reason: on a stock car it adds more power than any single bolt-on, and every later part needs a map that matches it. The Bootmod3 (BM3) S55 tune covers the F80 M3, F82/F83 M4 and F87 M2 Competition, with off-the-shelf stage 1 and stage 2 maps and room for custom tuning later. If you're deciding between a flash tune and a piggyback, we also carry the BMS JB4 for the S55 ($599), but bm3 is the more complete platform for stage 2 and beyond.

2. Charge pipes: cheap insurance

The S55's factory charge pipe and cold-side J-pipe are plastic. Raising boost with a tune puts more stress on them, and a split pipe means an instant loss of boost. Swapping to aluminum pipes before or with the tune is the most common reliability mod on tuned S55 cars. The VRSF S55 charge pipe kit is a direct-fit option for the F80 M3, F82 M4 and M2 Competition.

3. Downpipes for stage 2

Downpipes replace the restrictive factory pipes right after the turbos and are the hardware step that moves you from a stage 1 to a stage 2 map. Expect quicker spool and a louder, sharper exhaust note. Our VRSF S55 race downpipes are 3-inch 304 stainless and replace both factory downpipes and their converters; VRSF measures 20 to 25 whp and 25 to 30 lb-ft from them. They are catless, so they are for off-road and competition use only and will not pass US emissions inspections. If you need catalytic converters, the Active Autowerke S55 GESI catted downpipes ($2,849.05) are the catted option. Check your state's emissions rules before you buy.

4. Intake

An intake on its own is a modest power mod on a turbo car, but it pairs well with a tuned, downpiped S55 and adds a lot of turbo and induction sound. The Eventuri carbon intake V2 for the F80 M3/F82 M4 is the premium pick. VRSF's S55 high-flow intake ($279.99) is the budget route.

5. Exhaust: mid-pipe or full cat-back

The S55 feeds the exhaust from front and rear downpipes of different lengths, so the two banks of three cylinders reach the mid-pipe out of step. That is the raspy sound many F80 owners want to fix. An equal-length mid-pipe evens out those pulses for a smoother, fuller inline-six note. The Active Autowerke equal-length mid pipe Gen 2 is the loudest of its Gen 2 options and includes the F-brace; resonated versions are available if you want it quieter. If you want valves you can control, a full cat-back from Akrapovic, Milltek, Remus or FI Exhaust is the next step.

6. Pinned crank hub before big power

The S55 crank hub relies on a friction fit, and on high-power or aggressively driven builds it can slip and throw off valve timing. Pinning or replacing the hub is cheap insurance before you add turbos, ethanol blends or big custom maps. The RK Autowerks S55 billet pinned crank hub is built for this. Have a shop that knows the S55 do the install, because it needs the correct timing tools.

7. Cooling for track days and hot climates

Tuned S55s heat-soak quickly on track and in summer traffic, and power drops as intake temps climb. Start with a higher-capacity top-mount intercooler, such as the VRSF S55 top mount intercooler, then add a bigger front heat exchanger if you still see heat soak. Our S55 intercooler vs heat exchanger guide explains which one to buy first.

8. Turbos, suspension, brakes and wheels

  • Turbos: once bolt-ons and the crank hub are done, upgraded turbos like the PURE Turbos Stage 2 Hi-Flow (from $2,935.10) or Stage 2+ (from $3,915.10) are the next big jump. They need a custom tune and a fuel plan.
  • Suspension: H&R Super Sport springs for the F80 sedan ($424.15) lower the car and work with adaptive M suspension. Coilovers from KW, Ohlins or BC Racing are the track route.
  • Brakes and wheels: lighter forged wheels and a big brake kit are the last pieces of most finished F80 builds. Most owners finish the drivetrain first.

Sample F80 M3 build paths

Build Parts Best for
Daily stage 1 bm3 tune + charge pipe kit Big gain, factory sound, low cost
Street stage 2 Stage 1 + downpipes + intake + mid-pipe Most power from bolt-ons and much better sound
Track Stage 2 + top mount intercooler + crank hub + coilovers + brakes Consistent lap times and heat control
Big turbo Track build + PURE turbos + custom tune + fuel upgrades Maximum power

F80 M3 mods FAQ

What is the first mod to do on an F80 M3?

A tune. A bm3 flash tune adds more power than any single bolt-on on a stock S55, and every later mod (downpipes, intake, turbos) needs a map that matches it. Upgrade the plastic charge pipe and J-pipe with or right after the tune.

What years was the F80 M3 sold in the US?

The F80 M3 sedan was sold in the US for model years 2015 to 2018. The F82 M4 coupe and F83 convertible use the same S55 engine and ran through 2020, so most S55 parts fit both.

Do F80 M3 and F82 M4 parts interchange?

Most engine, intake, cooling and exhaust parts do, because both use the S55 twin-turbo 3.0L. Body parts, trunk spoilers and some suspension parts are specific to the sedan or the coupe, so check the listing for your exact car.

Are catless downpipes legal on an F80 M3?

No. Catless downpipes are for off-road and competition use only in the US and won't pass emissions inspections. If your car must stay street legal, choose catted downpipes such as the Active Autowerke S55 GESI downpipes and check your state's rules.

Do I need a pinned crank hub on my F80 M3?

It's recommended before high-power builds, such as upgraded turbos, ethanol blends or aggressive custom tunes, because the factory friction-fit crank hub can slip. Many owners on stage 1 or 2 bolt-ons still add it as insurance.

Will mods void my F80 M3 warranty?

Most F80 M3s are out of factory warranty by now. On any car, a dealer can deny a warranty claim if it can show an aftermarket part caused the failure, so keep receipts and stock parts.
