Porsche 981 Base Girodisc Rotors: Keep Your Calipers

by Golan Haiem 14 Oct 2026 0 Comments

A brake upgrade for a base Porsche 981 Cayman or Boxster does not have to start with a new set of calipers. Girodisc A1-035 front rotors offer a different route: a 340mm two-piece rotor assembly that works with the original brake layout using the supplied caliper spacers.

The useful question is not whether a larger disc looks better through the wheel. It is whether this specific rotor kit suits your car, your driving and your maintenance plan. Here is what changes, what stays and what to check before ordering.

Which 981 is this front rotor kit for?

The Girodisc 340mm front rotor kit for the base 981 Cayman and Boxster is the A1-035 application. AutoTalent lists it under SKU GIRA1-035. It is a front axle pair, not a four-wheel brake package.

Keep the word base in the buying decision. A1-035 is the base-model front application. It is not the kit selected here for an S or GTS brake system, a GT4, or Porsche Ceramic Composite Brakes. Another Porsche rotor can have the same nominal diameter without being the same application. Choose by brake configuration and part number, not by the model name alone.

If your car has already been converted to another caliper or rotor setup, tell us what is installed before ordering. That is a different fitment question from an original base-model brake system.

What changes with the Girodisc upgrade?

Part of the system What A1-035 does
Front rotor Uses a 340mm slotted iron friction ring with a separate aluminum hat
Caliper position Uses the supplied spacers to accommodate the larger rotor
Calipers and pads Retains the OE caliper and pad arrangement for the intended application
Future rotor service Allows replacement of the iron rings rather than the complete assembly

This is a rotor upgrade, not a big brake kit with replacement calipers. Girodisc's installation guidance places the spacer between the caliper and the upright. It also specifies using the spacers and bolts supplied with the kit. Those parts are part of the intended installation, not optional extras to substitute with generic hardware.

Why two-piece construction matters

The central hat is made from 6061-T6 aluminum. The friction ring is Girodisc's proprietary cast iron, poured in the USA and machined in-house. Separating those materials lets each do its job: the hat mounts the assembly, while the iron ring provides the braking surface.

Girodisc uses curved internal vanes to move cooling air through the disc as it rotates. The floating joint between the hat and ring allows movement as the rotor heats up. Drive pins carry braking loads, and spring washers help control cold rattle while allowing heat expansion.

These are the relevant design differences for an owner doing repeated hard braking. They do not establish a guaranteed stopping-distance improvement, a specific weight saving for your car or immunity from brake fade. Pads, fluid, tires and the condition of the rest of the brake system still matter.

Keep this purchase application-specific

For the broader road-versus-track buying decision, read our guide to whether Girodisc rotors are worth it. This 981 guide focuses on the next step: selecting the correct front assembly while retaining the intended OE calipers.

When comparing options in our Girodisc performance brake rotor collection, keep front and rear applications separate. A1-035 is a front axle purchase. It does not automatically select a rear rotor, a pad compound or a fluid package for you.

Installation and bedding deserve their own plan

Have the work performed by someone familiar with the Porsche brake system. Girodisc directs installers to the vehicle manufacturer's torque specifications and warns against loosening or tightening the floating rotor fasteners on a new assembly.

Rotor direction matters because the internal vanes are designed to move air in a particular direction. Follow the labels and instructions supplied with the discs rather than deciding left and right from the slot pattern alone. Check rotor-hat clearance to the pads and associated shims before driving.

Follow the bedding instructions for the chosen pad compound. A track pad and a road pad are not the same decision, and a new rotor does not replace the need to inspect fluid, pad condition and caliper health. Girodisc also calls for checking the marked minimum disc thickness, especially before and after track events.

Think beyond the first set of rings

One benefit of the two-piece assembly is the next service interval. When the iron rings need replacement, the existing Girodisc hats can be reused as directed by the manufacturer. Replacement rings must match the Girodisc application; a ring from another brand is not a shortcut.

Start with the correct front kit, then plan the rest of your Porsche performance upgrades around how you actually use the car. A focused brake change is easier to assess than replacing several parts at once without a clear goal.

Order the right 981 front rotor kit

For an original base 981 Cayman or Boxster brake setup, choose the A1-035 Girodisc 340mm front rotor application. Confirm the current brake configuration and remember that the listing covers a pair of front rotors.
