2022+ WRX AMS Top-Mount Intercooler: What Changes?

by Golan Haiem 15 Oct 2026 0 Comments

A top-mount intercooler upgrade for a 2022+ Subaru WRX does not have to mean moving the cooling system to the front bumper. The AMS Performance unit replaces the factory intercooler in its original location, using a larger bar-and-plate core while keeping the factory mounting points and hood-scoop airflow path.

The buying decision is more specific than choosing the biggest cooler. You need the right WRX application, a compatible charge-pipe connection and a clear understanding of what the published cooling figures actually promise. Here is what changes with AMS part AMS.50.09.0001-1, and what still needs attention before ordering.

The AMS top mount keeps the intercooler in the factory location.

Which WRX is this AMS intercooler for?

The AMS top-mount intercooler for the 2022+ Subaru WRX is the application covered here. AMS lists the FA24-powered WRX, including all sub-models, and its installation instructions identify the VB chassis. AutoTalent lists it under SKU AMSAMS.50.09.0001-1.

Choose by the 2022+ FA24 application and exact part number. Older WRX and STI top mounts can use different connections and mounting arrangements; a similar-looking Subaru intercooler is not the same application.

What changes while the intercooler stays on top?

Part of the design AMS specification
Core 21 x 7.5 x 4 inches, bar-and-plate construction
Core size 71% increase over the factory core, as stated by AMS
Cooling passages 37-row core with louvered fins inside and out
Charge-pipe flange Opening area enlarged 13% over stock
Mounting Factory mounting locations and hardware; no cutting or trimming specified

The larger core is paired with cast-aluminum end tanks, and AMS says the assembly is TIG welded by hand in the USA. Each intercooler is pressure tested before boxing. Those are useful construction details, but they do not remove the need to install the seals and connections correctly on your car.

This is a replacement top mount, not a front-mount conversion kit. It is designed to fill the factory hood scoop and duct. If your goal specifically requires a front-mount layout, do not buy this part expecting it to include the piping and mounting arrangement for that different job.

Read the cooling numbers as a comparison, not a guarantee

AMS lists a 48.6-degree Fahrenheit reduction in charge-air temperature compared with the OEM top mount, along with a 12% reduction in pressure drop. Those are manufacturer comparison figures, not a fixed temperature reduction for every WRX and driving condition.

The useful takeaway is the product's cooling and airflow purpose. The 71% core-size increase is not a horsepower-gain percentage. Choose it for the stock-location cooling upgrade, rather than a promised power number.

Match that purpose to your use. Repeated loaded runs and a daily commute are different demands. Tell us how you use the car and what you want to improve so the cooling plan starts with the right goal.

Check the charge pipe before adding more parts

AMS states compatibility with the OEM charge pipe and most OEM-style aftermarket charge pipes. The word most matters: it is not a guarantee for every aftermarket flange, coupler or custom piping arrangement.

An aftermarket charge pipe is not automatically required just because this intercooler is larger. If the car already has one, identify the exact brand and part before ordering. If you are planning several changes together, use the AMS Performance parts collection to plan the system, then confirm the connections between the selected parts.

Keep the calibration question separate from physical fitment. A direct bolt-in description does not establish a universal tune rule for every combination of intake, charge pipe, boost target and existing calibration. Review the complete modification list with the person responsible for the car's calibration; no specific power result is promised here.

Direct fit still means careful installation

AMS's instructions call for transferring the factory charge pipe, throttle-body x-ring and two side grommets to the replacement intercooler. The factory retaining clip and mounting hardware are part of the procedure. A no-cut design is useful, but it is not permission to ignore a damaged seal or an incomplete connection.

Use the AMS WRX top-mount intercooler installation instructions and have the work done by someone familiar with the VB WRX. The manufacturer notes that optional equipment and previous modifications can change the installation. This article is a buying guide, not a substitute for that procedure.

California buyers need an eligibility check first

AMS currently states that CARB and/or EPA compliance testing has not been completed for this product. It also lists California purchase and shipping restrictions, including an AMS Race Waiver requirement. Do not assume that a bolt-in intercooler is approved for California street use. A waiver is not proof of street legality; confirm the current rules and intended use before ordering.

Choose the cooler around the WRX you actually have

The AMS top mount is a focused option for a 2022+ FA24 WRX owner who wants a larger intercooler in the factory location, rather than a front-mount conversion. Check the application, existing charge pipe, installation condition and local eligibility before committing.

For the rest of the build, browse our Subaru performance parts without assuming that every WRX or STI part belongs on the same car. Need help matching the cooler to your setup?
