Exhaust headers make easier for the engine to push exhaust gases out of the cylinders. According to the thermodynamic theory, the four-stroke cycle in “How Car Engines Work”, you will notice that the engine produces all of its power during the stroke. However, the gasoline in the cylinder burns and expands during this power stroke, generating a lot of power. And, the other three strokes are necessary or required to make the stroke possible. If these three power strokes consume a lot of power, they are a drain on the engine.
During the exhaust headers stroke, there is a better way for an engine to lose power, which is through back pressure. The exhaust valve opens at the beginning of the exhaust power stroke, and then the piston pushes the exhaust gases out of the cylinder with the help of car headers. And, if there is any resistance that the piston has to push, to force the exhaust gases out of the cylinder, the power or energy is wasted. Imagine using two exhaust valves rather than one, it will definitely improve the flow of gas by making the hole. Thus, making the exhaust gases travel through a larger area.
In a normal engine, once the gases exit the exhaust headers they end up in the exhaust manifold. Typically in a four-cylinder or eight-cylinder engine, there are four cylinders using the same exhaust manifold. From the manifold, the exhaust gases flow into one pipe toward the catalytic converter and the ¬muffler, remember when I say catalytic converter, it means I’m not talking about the Catless headers. Exhaust manifold can be an important source of back pressure because exhaust gases flow from one cylinder, build up the pressure in the exhaust manifold then moves to the next cylinder.
The main idea behind the exhaust headers is to eliminate the exhaust manifold's back pressure. Instead of a common manifold that all of the cylinders share, each cylinder gets its own exhaust pipe. These cylinder pipes come together in a long and larger pipe called the collector. These individual long pipes are cut and bent so that each one is the same length as the others. By making them the same size, it guarantees that each cylinder's exhaust gases arrive in the collector spaced out equally so there is no back pressure generated by the cylinders sharing the collector.
