Catted vs catless downpipes

A catted downpipe keeps a high-flow catalytic converter (GESI, HJS or a 100–400 cell sport cat). It flows far better than the factory part but stays quiet, avoids a raw-fuel smell and is the right choice for a daily-driven car. A catless downpipe replaces the catalyst with straight pipe for maximum flow and the loudest sound; catless and race downpipes are sold for off-road and competition use only.

What is a downpipe?

A downpipe is the section of exhaust that bolts directly to the turbocharger outlet and carries exhaust gas down to the rest of the system. On most turbo cars the factory downpipe also holds the first catalytic converter, which makes it the most restrictive part of the exhaust.

What does a turbo downpipe do?

A turbo downpipe is a larger, smoother replacement for the factory pipe. It lowers back-pressure right after the turbo, so the turbo spools sooner and the engine makes more mid-range torque. Gains depend on the car and the tune; most platforms see the biggest jump when the downpipe is paired with a matching ECU tune.

Catted vs catless downpipe: what's the difference?

A catted downpipe keeps a high-flow catalytic converter (GESI, HJS or 100–400 cell sport cats), so it's quieter, avoids a raw-fuel smell and is the right choice for street-driven cars. A catless downpipe replaces the catalyst with straight pipe for maximum flow and is sold for off-road and competition use only.

Do I need a tune with a downpipe?

Yes, on almost every turbo car. A downpipe changes exhaust flow and oxygen-sensor readings, so pair it with an ECU tune to avoid fault codes and get the full power gain.

Will a downpipe fit my factory cat-back?

Does a downpipe make the car louder?
