Bench Flash vs OBD: How M-Engineering Tunes Are Installed

OBD at home (M-Tuner): Porsche 991.2 and 992.1 911, 718 Boxster/Cayman and 982 GT4/Spyder/GTS 4.0. The ECU stays in the car. The 991.2 and 718 PDK tunes also load over OBD.
One-time bench unlock, then OBD (McLaren): on M838T and M840T cars, the ECU is removed and mailed to M-Engineering once to be unlocked. After that, every flash and map change happens at home with M-Tuner.
Bench flash: the 992.2 M-Flash tunes, the 992.1 and 992.2 GT3 and GT3 RS, the GT4 RS and Spyder RS, the 2025+ Panamera and Cayenne, the 2025 Urus and every Ferrari tune. The ECU (or the PDK2 module on 992.1 PDK tunes) is sent to M-Engineering and returned flashed, with a typical turnaround of about 24 hours after it arrives.

M-Engineering McLaren Tuning

McLaren is where M-Engineering made its name, and the company says it has tuned thousands of the world's fastest McLarens. For the 4.0L M840T cars (720S, 765LT, 750S, Senna, GT), start with the M-Tuner Calibration Suite for the M840T, then step up to the M840T Stage 2+ Power Package or the M840T Stage 3 Power Package. For the 3.8L M838T cars (12C, 650S, 675LT, 570S, 600LT), there is the M838T M-Tuner Calibration Suite plus the M838T Stage 2+ and Stage 3 packages. Supporting parts include the ID1050-XDS injector set and the CSF charge-air-coolers for the 720S, 765LT, 750S and GT.

M-Engineering Porsche Tuning

M-Engineering's Porsche range covers the 911 from the 991.1 GT3 to the latest 992.2, plus the 718, Panamera and Cayenne. Popular starting points are the 992.1 Carrera M-Tuner tune, the 992.1 Turbo S M-Tuner tune and the 992.2 Carrera / T / S M-Flash tune. For more power there are the 992.1 Turbo S Stage 3 and Stage 4 PTME1100 packages, and the PDK2 tune sharpens the gearbox to match. M-Engineering also supports the 991.2 Carrera, Turbo S and GT2 RS, and GT3 owners can choose from the 992.1 GT3 / GT3 Touring, 992.1 GT3 RS and 991.2 GT3 / GT3 RS ECU tunes.

M-Engineering Ferrari and Lamborghini Tuning

For Ferrari, M-Engineering offers bench-flashed ECU tunes for the 458 Italia and Speciale, 488 GTB, 488 Pista, F8 Tributo, 812 Superfast and SF90 Stradale. Its power packages for the 488, 488 Pista and F8 add a CSF intercooler system. For the Lamborghini Urus there are the 2019-2022 Urus tune, the 2025 Urus (H80) tune and the Urus Power Package.

About M-Engineering

Besides M-Tuner, M-Engineering offers custom remote calibrations (ProTune): you datalog the car, email the log, and M-Engineering sends back a revised file. It also runs a South Florida dyno facility in Pompano Beach, opened in March 2022, with a Mainline ProHub dyno for in-person tuning by appointment.

Do I have to send my ECU to M-Engineering?

It depends on the car. McLaren M838T and M840T cars need a one-time bench unlock: you remove the ECU and mail it to M-Engineering, and after that every flash is done at home over OBD-II with the wireless M-Tuner. Porsche 991.2, 992.1 and 718 M-Tuner tunes flash over OBD with no mail-in. The 992.2 M-Flash tunes, the 992.1 and 992.2 GT3, GT4 RS, 2025+ Panamera, Cayenne and Urus, and the Ferrari tunes are bench flashes, so the ECU is sent to M-Engineering, with a typical turnaround of about 24 hours after it arrives. Each product page states the method.

What is the difference between M-Tuner and M-Flash?

M-Tuner is M-Engineering's wireless OBD flashing tool for the McLaren M838T and M840T and the Porsche 9X2 cars. It loads the tune at home, datalogs, clears faults and switches maps. M-Flash is the bench-flashed calibration for the newer 992.2 911s. That ECU is unlocked and flashed at M-Engineering, then returned with map switching already active.

Can I switch maps or go back to stock?

Yes on most tunes. Live Map Switching stores several maps on the ECU, such as 91, 93 and 100 octane files, and you change between them with the cruise control stalk while the car is running. M-Tuner can also flash the car back to stock. On the 992.2 M-Flash tunes, M-Engineering says a return to stock means mailing the ECU back, so check the product page for your car.

Do I need a separate PDK tune?

The PDK tune is a separate product, and it works alongside an M-Engineering engine tune. The 991.2 and 718 PDK tunes flash over OBD with the M-Tuner you already own. The 992.1 PDK2 and the 991.1 and 991.2 GT3 PDK tunes are bench flashes, so the transmission control unit is sent to M-Engineering.

What hardware do the Stage 2 and Stage 3 packages need?

It varies by car, and each package page lists exactly what is included and what is required. On the McLaren M840T, for example, Stage 2 maps expect aftermarket downpipes of 3 inches or larger, Stage 2+ adds Injector Dynamics ID1050X injectors with a plug-and-play harness, and Stage 3 adds upgraded turbochargers.
